Day 5: Sault Sainte Marie to Duluth
After a hearty breakfast at a local diner, we spent the morning at Soo Locks. We arrived just in time to see a huge freighter go through the Poe Lock, dropping 21 feet in about 20 minutes. Our mechanically-inclined Mr. 7 was enthralled. Actually everyone was really into it except a tired, hungry Mr. 0. I tried to find a quiet place to feed him and he refused. I managed to get him to sleep and we checked out the Visitor Center (we will definitely be checking out the boatnerd website to track boats through the Great Lakes) before jumping back into the car for the long trip to Duluth. We stopped at Walmart for supplies, where Mr. 0 who had napped only about 30 minutes again refused to eat. It was there we discovered he had a 5th tooth and added OraJel to the supplies. The rest of the day was a blur of driving, stopping to let the boys run around while Mr. 0 refused to eat, until finally around 4pm he decided to give in. Unfortunately we still had miles to go and everyone was tired. We finished up Because of Winn Dixie (Mr. 9's favorite Kate DiCamillo book with The Tale of Desperaux a close second), watched movies, etc. Mr. 9 finished Return of the King and loved it. It may now be his favorite book, but he says he's still deciding. I think a movie night (or many given the length) is in order for Mr. 9 when we return.
We're almost to Duluth and are listening to the brother Space Warp mix to get us through. A few days with good friends sounds just about perfect. Just don't ask us any tough questions tonight.
