Another snow day!

This has definitely been one of our snowier winters - today was our 4th snow day since Christmas break. Luckily snow is lots of fun - even our small one is starting to like it. He started the winter with a distinct aversion to the snow and now is at least tolerant. It looks like he even pitched in with the shoveling (there has been plenty to go around)!

Big fall

Today on the way to school Mr. 7 was happily telling me all about bank notes and why they are important and Mr. 5 was trying to get a few words in during any pauses and we were actually a little early when Mr. 5 tripped over a tall brick (Beacon Hill sidewalks are not so smooth) and went face first into the pavement.

I quickly picked him up and hugged him before I noticed the large amount of blood covering his face. His nose was not just oozing blood but it was coming out in a pretty steady stream. I pulled out whatever I could find in my pockets (thank goodness for Dunkin Donuts napkins) and tried to pinch the bridge of his nose while propelling him forward and preventing any further falls. Luckily he seemed so dazed by the blood that he stopped crying and kept moving. Mr. 7 hovered around us and asked what was happening and I explained that noses bleed and Mr. 5 would be just fine. Somehow we made it to school (although created a bit of a scene with our entrance covered in blood) and into the bathroom. By this time his nose was down to oozing and he was much more concerned with the blood on his new pilot jacket. Thankfully, blood wiped off his precious new coat rather easily - I can't say the same for my jacket. The shoulder is not looking so good and I had to continue on to work with the visible blood stains. I do work at a hospital so perhaps no one really thought anything of it!

I managed to clean off Mr. 5's face so he didn't look like any 911 calls needed to be made and took him up to his class where his teacher took over telling him how brave he was. He even gave his day an aleph 10 which is pretty good given that aleph is bigger than infinity. He has a bruise across his nose but otherwise weathered the fall without a scratch. I really do think he's made of titanium!

Go potty

Mr. 1 often wants to go potty before getting in the bath. Only once has anything happened and I thought that it was a bit of a fluke. Tonight though he was absolutely insistent that he needed to "go potty". After a good 5 minutes of trying, I told him we were done and put him in the bath. He was not at all happy with this and continued to cry "go potty". As soon as his feet hit the warm water he started to pee. I quickly whisked him out of the bath and deposited him back on his stool where he promptly went potty. He was quite proud of himself - especially when I broke out the chocolate to celebrate. After eating his little piece he happily got in the bath. Maybe potty-training this one won't be so hard.

Our night

Mr. 7 is certainly enjoying the banking videos but you need to make sure you have back-up reading material just in case it gets slow. Here was reading through Math by Simon Basher while still keeping an eye on the banking video. He then proceeded to give Nana and Papa a quick banking lesson via Skype so it seems he was paying attention despite the open book.

While Mr. 7 was enjoying the Khan Academy, Mr. 5 and Mr. 1 were engrossed in their legos. It was quiet until Mr. 5 decided to use the legos as confetti, shouting "Happy New Year" as he threw them up in the air. Mr. 1 thought this was hilarious!

The Khan Academy

Mr. 7 is currently watching all the lessons on banking through the Khan Academy. And Mr. 5 spent a good half hour doing the addition and subtraction math lessons and was disappointed when he had to stop to eat dinner (how mean of me to stop his learning so he can eat). They have problems at the end of each lesson and if you answer the problems correctly you get points. And if you do all the problems right you get more points. The boys love it - they cheer when they get more points and are disappointed if they miss any. Not that these points earn anything other than glory - which seems more than enough for us!

Do you think Mr. 7 will take over our finances after he finishes all the banking lessons? It would definitely free up some of my time...

Hiking

We started the new year out at a beautiful 50 degree day which is hard to come by this time of year. Naturally we had to get outside so we headed out for a snowy hike. Everyone was thrilled to be tromping through the snow although we shedded clothes as we went. Only Mr. 7 actually returned to the car in full snow gear and even he had unzipped his coat.

Mr. 1 has been very unsure about tromping around in his snowboots but today he had a great time hiking along (as long as he was holding a hand). The older boys were great explorer and checked out everything along the path with their binoculars and jewelers loops.

One of the best moments was listening to Mr. 7 sing The Wheels on the Bus to Mr. 1 in the car but mixing up all the words so the wheels went "waaa, waaa, waaa" and the horn on the bus said "move on back". Mr. 5 thought it was hilarious and so of course Mr. 1 laughed right along. If the big brothers think it's funny, it must be!
